The Maldives is an incredible place to enjoy dolphin, turtle, and brightly coloured reef fish encounters. This article provides insight into what travellers may be likely to see throughout the year and to gain a greater knowledge of the tropical ocean.
Discover Marine Life Around South Ari Atoll
Resorts like Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort provide a tropical island base for travellers interested in experiencing the Maldives’ diverse marine environment. South Ari Atoll is particularly well known for whale shark encounters, while green and hawksbill turtles can also be found around its coral reefs. Although sightings depend on weather, season and wildlife behaviour, the region offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving.
Look for Manta Rays in Baa Atoll
Villas in the Maldives can provide travellers with a comfortable and private base for enjoying marine-focused experiences across different atolls. Baa Atoll is particularly famous for manta ray encounters, with Hanifaru Bay attracting large feeding aggregations during the southwest monsoon season. Manta sightings are especially associated with the period from June to November, although encounters remain naturally unpredictable.
Discover Dolphins Around the Maldives
Spinner dolphins are one of the most common dolphin species seen in the Maldivian waters, and they are frequently spotted in tourist areas travelling between islands. North Mal, South Mal, Baa and Vaavu atolls represent locations where dolphin trips can be undertaken with a small chance during calm sea conditions, and it is recommended that operators that allow dolphins to disperse freely without being further disturbed are favoured.
Explore Reef Fish and Other Marine Life
The Maldives' coral reefs are home to lots of marine life, including colourful reef fish, clownfish, rays, moray eels and reef sharks. Snorkelling over the shallow reefs is a simple way to enjoy close encounters with the smaller creatures, while diving will give the potential to see some of these, which prefer the deeper reef habitats. As with all other coral systems, care should be taken by visitors to avoid touching the coral or marine life and to follow the local conservation recommendations.
