The Thai capital features several monuments which will draw the attention of the visitor. Every traveller should make an effort to visit at least a few of these major attractions.
The Grand Royal Palace is an array of magnificent buildings which served as a significant royal residence from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. Although the monarch no longer makes his residence at the site the majestic palace retains its status as Thailand’s spiritual and political home. The most significant part of the compound is the Wat Phra Kaew temple which houses the revered Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most venerated religious statue. Crafted in jade and dating to the 15th century, the 45 cm statue may only be approached by the Thai King.
Wat Arun, another major Buddhist temple is also one of Bangkok’s most scenic sites. A remnant of the Ayuthaya period, this shrine features an 82 metre tower which is the tallest such construction in the city. All of the Wat’s towers are decorated using china ceramic materials. The architecture of the temple is reminiscent of Cambodian temple motifs.
