There are a number of islets that are governed by the city, and some of them are relatively large inhabited islets. It is believed that the land has been formed by the silt that was carried along the Yangtze River over thousands of years and it is the third-largest island in the region. Hengsha, Changxing and Chongming are the isles that bear human settlement, and they are expected to be connected to the mainland by bridge in the near future.
