A long network of connecting underground tunnels situated in the district of Cu Chi in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Cu Chi Tunnels are part of a larger tunnel network underlying much of the nation. Noted for having being the location of a number of military campaigns during the period of the Vietnam War, these tunnels were also used as hiding points by Viet Cong soldiers during combat. Having served as supply and communication routes as well as living quarters for fighters of North Vietnam, the tunnels have played a major role in helping the Viet Cong achieve their eventual military success.

However during the war period, U.S. officials did notice and recognize the benefits the Viet Cong enjoyed owing to the tunnels of Cu Chi and thus launched quite a few major campaigns for the search and destruction of the tunnel system such as Operation Cedar Falls and Operation Crimp. However these operations could not bring the desired success and it took a series of attempts till the ultimate discovery and full scope of these underground mazes were made. U.S officials even trained an elite group of volunteers in the art of tunnel warfare; armed with just a flashlight, knife, gun and a piece of string, these specialists were known as “tunnel rats”. Despite all such efforts U.S. operations remained insufficient and eventually they had to withdraw their troops.

The government of Vietnam has long been preserving the complex of the Cu Chi tunnels which stretch for about 75 miles and is now a war memorial park. A renowned tourist attraction, the tunnel system consists of some safer parts into which visitors can crawl and explore. In order to make travelling through the tunnels easier, booby traps have been marked clearly and low-power lights have been installed. Visitors also get to savour the type of meal Viet Cong fighters may have eaten offering a truly unique experience.
