Once a winter palace for the emperors of the past, the Beihai Park stands just north of the Forbidden City – an area containing the imperial palaces from a bygone era, to which entry was forbidden to all except those belonging to the imperial family. The park itself consists of classical gardens, winding canals and beautiful Buddhist shrines – yet the main feature here is its large and magnificent lake which covers most of the park. Standing tall in the middle of the lake is the white-stone Bai Ta Stupa, intricately engraved with images of the sun, moon and fire, which rises majestically from the placid water. Row boats are available here for hire allowing visitors to take in the sights and sounds of Beijing’s largest and prettiest public lake.
Among many other things to see at the park, are the Round City which is known for its famous jar and believed to be the only thing left from the great Khan that reigned China in Yuan Dynasty. The park also features the White Pagoda, Jade Flower Island, Nine-Dragon Wall, Wanfo Lou Tower and Iron Screen which too are absolute delights to explore. Since the White Pagoda is the highest point of the park, it serves as a vantage point offering a scenic view of the the area. There are several other buildings and halls one could visit. These include the Zhengjue Hall, the Bell and Drum Towers, the Stone Tablets of ‘Qiongdao Chunyin’ inscribed by Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, all scattered on the slope of the Qionghua Islet.
