Located a few kilometres apart, both Pasikuda and Kalkuda are stunning beaches located in the eastern coastal region of Sri Lanka. Being similar in many aspects, If you are finding it difficult to choose which one to visit, here is a guide to help you make the right choice
Kalkudah
With lush coconut palms in the background and turquoise blue waters, Kalkuda beach, unlike Passikudah, is less crowded during peak season and it features a more natural and tranquil environment. With stagnant and calm waters the beach is excellent for snorkelling and swimming. The warm golden sands also offer an ideal ground for sunbathing or to just lean back and relax.
Pasikuda
Similar to Kalkuda, Pasikuda is also fringed in coconut palms and boast amazing sceneries. But what makes this beach special is that it has the longest stretch of shallow waters in the island and offers excellent opportunities for snorkelling and scuba diving. the beach is also more touristy than Kalkuda and it is mostly crowded during peak season. The advantage of choosing this beach than Kalkudah is it is located at proximity to many upscale resort properties.
The beach experience
The beach experience is very similar but there are few differences as well; these different though it may not sound significant for many, for a smaller audience it would be the difference that would help them choose between the beaches. One of such is the environment and the ambience of the beaches. Passikuar being the most popular out of the two is more crowded and it is somewhat artificial interms of the establishments built around the beach and the modifications were done to the landscape. Kalkuda however, looks and feels more natural and it is less crowded and peaceful. The verdict here is, if you wish to visit a beach that is more lively and active, you should choose Pasikuda but if you are looking for some peace of mind and relaxation the best option would be Kalkudah.
Getting there
Located approximately 32 kilometres away from Batticaloa, and placed in proximity to one another, you can easily reach both of the beaches by taxi or a tuk-tuk from Batticaloa. If you are a bit cost-conscious, you could also choose pubic transportation such as a but.
