You may have heard that Sri Lanka is blessed with truly sublime beaches, but don’t forget that inland, you will find mist-shrouded mountains too. One of the best places to experience this is Nuwara Eliya, which provides plenty to discover on your first visit… no doubt, it won’t be your last!
01. Victoria Park
Definitely one of the most picturesque attractions in Nuwara Eliya, Victoria Park is a great place to unwind and experience Mother Nature’s colourful floral side. It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely walk surrounded by manicured lawns, vibrant flowers, and towering trees that seem to whisper in the breeze. If you are travelling with family, the little ones will love the playground and mini train ride. And, if you visit between March and May or August and September, you will be greeted by lots of blooms, which make this spot even more Instagrammable.
02. Lake Gregory
A visit to this enchanting destination just isn’t complete without spending some time at Lake Gregory. This lovely lake is ideal for a quiet stroll along the banks, though you can enjoy boating and some water sports here as well. On a calm morning, the reflections of the surrounding hills on the water are absolutely mesmerising… it’s the kind of scene that makes you forget to check your phone! Grab a warm cup of tea or a snack from one of the nearby stalls, find a bench, and just let the serenity soak in. Alternatively, you can have a picnic, go cycling or let the kids enjoy pony rides. Pro tip: Look to stay nearby at properties like Araliya Red so you can easily reach this site (you may end up making multiple visits) and other key attractions too.
03. Devon Falls
If you love a good waterfall (and who doesn’t?), Devon Falls is a must-see and is another of the top places to visit in Nuwara Eliya. Cascading down 97 metres, it’s often called the “Veil of the Valley”, and for good reason. You can find some great vantage points of this waterfall along the main Hatton–Nuwara Eliya road, as well as from the Mlesna Tea Castle, so don’t forget your camera. The surrounding tea plantations add to the scene’s charm, making it a photographer’s dream. Bonus: This attraction is also within easy reach of St. Clair’s Falls, which is worth seeing on the same trip.
04. Pedro Tea Estate
You can’t come to Nuwara Eliya and not visit a tea plantation; after all, this part of the country was the birthplace of Ceylon Tea. Plan a visit to the Pedro Tea Estate, where you can enjoy a more immersive experience than just tasting (don’t worry, that’s on offer as well). Look to take a tour at this estate where you actually have a chance to see first-hand the art of tea plucking… it’s harder than it may look. You will also get insights into the “leaf to cup” journey as you see how tea leaves are processed at a factory before being packed to make their way across the world. Of course, there’s a café here too, so you can end the visit with a perfect cuppa!
05. Hakgala Botanic Gardens
To enjoy more of nature’s splendour, don’t miss a chance to visit the Hakgala Botanic Gardens, which is easy to reach from the main town. You can expect lush landscapes, exotic blooms, and towering ferns… it’s kind of like walking through a scene from a fairy tale. One of the highlights here is definitely the rose garden with colourful varieties, including those from England. Also, head to the central pond, which has yellow water lilies. From the fernery and arboretum to the glass house and more, you will find other sites as well with flora from around the world, all vying for your attention and a place on your Instagram stories!
