Modern day Dubai is a far cry from the days of Arab seafarers and colorful spice scented markets. Originally the Al Bastikya district was a residential area that was mostly inhabited by Iranian migrants; this is further corroborated by the area being named after Bastak region in Iran. The construction of this residential area dates back to the end of the 19th century, when wealthy Arab merchants made this their home. Although it started off as a high end residential district, many of Dubai’s wealthiest relocated from the narrow streets of Baskatiya following the discovery of oil.
The most striking feature of the district is its narrow lanes that create a maze within the old Arab-style houses. The tall towers with spires that look like they were taken right of Disney’s Aladdin create the surreal impression of walking back in time. The area is also home to some authentic Arabian restaurants that serve up traditional dishes with legendary Arabian hospitality. Other places of interest to visit are the museum and galleries. These showcase traditional Arabian art in various forms be it dainty handicrafts or colorful tapestry. Presently, it is regarded as one of the most serene places in the reigion, enveloped by a picturesque surrounding. Drawing in a number of travellers, it is the ideal example of the ancient settlement in the Middle East, especially for the history buffs who are interested in delving deep into the history of the tranquil district.
The Baskatiya district is located in a significant area for tourists as it is in close proximity to the historic Al Fahidi Fort and the famous Dubai creek. The tall wind towers that line the creek were meant to hustle up cool air into the residential area of Baskatiya.
