There’s a moment on the Kafue River when the boat engine cuts out, and everything goes still. Hippos snort in the distance, a fish eagle calls from a dead tree, and the only movement is the current sliding past. That’s when you realise it is a world you get to step into for a little while.
Stay Where the Wild Things Swim
The best river trips start right at your doorstep. Camps like Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River set you up on the water’s edge, so the safari begins before you’ve even had breakfast. Picture canvas tents with real beds, a deck chair facing the channel, and elephants crossing the river while you sip your coffee. At night, hippos graze on the banks, and the sounds of the lapping water become your lullaby. It’s camping, but the kind your back will thank you for.
Boat Safaris That Beat the Road
Game drives are great, but a boat trip on the Kafue River is something else entirely. You glide past pods of hippos packed tight as stepping stones, crocodiles sunbathing with jaws wide open, and buffalo herds coming down to drink at the banks. Elephants wade in chest-deep, trunks held high like snorkels, while kingfishers dive-bomb the water beside you. Late afternoon is the sweet spot; the light turns golden, the heat softens, and every bend in the river feels like a scene from a documentary, except you’re in it.
Cast a Line for The Fish
The Kafue is famous for the African tigerfish. A silver, striped fighter with serious teeth and a serious attitude. Catch-and-release fishing trips run from most river camps, and even if you’ve never held a rod, the guides will have you hooked within the hour.
Sunsets That Stop Conversation
Every day on the river ends the same way, and nobody ever complains. The boat pulls up on a sandbank, cold drinks come out, and the sun sinks low over the water, painting everything amber and pink. Baboons chatter their way home along the banks as the first stars appear. Bring a light jacket; river evenings get deliciously cool. And bring your camera, though no photo quite does it justice.
