Getting There
Most prominent Hangzhou accommodation options – for instance, the Citadines Intime City Hangzhou – will recommend the Leifeng Pagoda to be added to your sightseeing itinerary. You can reach the site via various buses from the Jingsi Temple Station.
The History
The pagoda was first established in 977 during the reign of the Northern Song Dynasty. It was built to celebrate the pregnancy of Huangfei, the favourite concubine of the King of Wuyue. As such, it was originally called the Huangfei Pagoda.
The Legend
According to legend, the Leifeng Pagoda is associated with the grand romance between a mortal man and a white snake spirit. It is said that an evil monk imprisoned the spirit underneath the pagoda but she eventually broke free, took her revenge on the monk, and reunited with her lover.
The Layout
The pagoda itself is compromised of three parts – namely, the top section, the body, and the pedestal. The pedestal alone is 10 metres high and the complete structure measures a towering 72 metres! All in all, it’s quite the sight to see up-close
