Travelling through the Maldives comes with its own set of unspoken rules that can make your trip smoother, more respectful, and a lot more enjoyable. It’s the kind of place where a little awareness goes a long way—whether you’re exploring local islands, unwinding on resort shores, or simply soaking up the atmosphere. Keeping a few simple dos and don’ts in mind helps you blend in effortlessly and avoid any awkward moments.
Don’t Damage the Coral
The environment here is incredibly delicate, so it’s worth doing your bit to keep everything thriving. When you’re out snorkelling, try to move gently and avoid disturbing what’s around you. With that in mind, the Maldives is still one of the most amazing places to explore underwater.
Do Dress Modestly on Public Islands
A simple way to stay comfortable in more traditional places is to lean toward modest clothing. On inhabited islands, it’s best for women to keep their shoulders and legs covered, and men might prefer long pants over shorts. Revealing swimwear—especially bikinis—is a no-go outside resort areas!
Don’t Go Out in Malé Past Curfew
The capital tends to wind down early, with a curfew kicking in around 10:00 pm. If you’re passing through and have some time to look around before your transfer, just be sure to head back in before it takes effect, as the curfew is taken quite seriously. This isn’t a concern at a luxury resort in the Maldives, though, as they are usually based on their own private islands, like Kuda Villingili is.

Do Be Extra Respectful During Ramadan
During Ramadan, everyone observes strict fasting from sunrise to sunset, so things slow down a bit on inhabited islands. Many eateries stay closed during the day, and it’s best to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public out of respect.
