Yueh Hai Ching Temple
Set in the Central Business District is Yueh Hai Ching Temple, one of the country’s oldest Taoist temples, easy to reach from hotels like Grand Park City Hall. Built in the 1820s by the Teochew community, it features intricate carvings, sculptures, and roofs with distinctive ornamentation, including dragons. Battlebox
Tucked away amidst Fort Canning Park, the Battlebox was the nerve centre of Allied operations during the last days before Singapore’s surrender in World War Two. Today, this site, which is within easy reach of Civic District-based luxury Singapore hotels, has been meticulously recreated, complete with a gripping 40-minute audio tour and two immersive 270° projection rooms. Reflections at Bukit Chandu
History lovers should definitely visit Reflections at Bukit Chandu, a World War Two interpretative centre honouring the brave Malay Regiment who fought in the Battle of Pasir Panjang in 1942. You will find sculptures, immersive displays, and rare artefacts that bring the story to life. Suffice it to say, it’s an evocative reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience that shaped modern Singapore.
Jinrikisha Station
Once the main depot for rickshaws in Singapore, the Jinrikisha Station opened in 1904 and still boasts its distinctive Edwardian architecture. Its exposed red brickwork and white plaster mouldings are hard to miss; head closer and take a look at the Municipal Council crest featuring a lion and palm tree, displayed above. Of course, it’s just a short walk from the Maxwell Food Centre, making it the perfect pit stop before or after lunch!
