It’s the kind of place you visit for a few days and end up wishing you’d booked longer. The pace is slower here than in Colombo, and that’s really the point. Here’s what to expect along the way.
Galle Fort
Galle Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s best-known historic landmarks. Built by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch, it is now home to cafés, shops, galleries and colonial-era buildings. Travellers can walk along the old ramparts for views of the Indian Ocean before exploring the narrow streets inside the fort.
Dinner on the Beach
A private dinner on the beach is a lovely way to spend an evening on Sri Lanka’s coast. Many resorts arrange tables right by the sea, with lanterns, fresh seafood and views of the sunset. Barberyn Lighthouse

Beruwala Harbour
Come early morning, and the harbour is loud with fishing boats coming in. Locals haggle over the day’s catch, gulls circle overhead, and the whole scene gives you a real sense of daily life on this coast, far from the resorts. It only takes half an hour, and don’t forget to set the alarm for it!
