Located in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, this fortress was occupied by King Kashyapa who selected it as his capital residence because of its secure location. There are many interesting stories about King Kashyapa. While one says that the king was more of a pleasure-lover who spent time with his many concubines in Sigiriya leading a life of indulgences others say he was seeking sanctuary in this impenetrable fortress, from his brother who was hunting King Ksshyapa to avenge the death of their father. The most important feature of this fortress is the beautiful frescos, ones that depict apsaras or beautiful women painted in a unique style using amazing colours. The mirror wall is another remarkable area, a wall which was so polished that the king could look at his reflection.
The climb to top of Sigiriya is also thrilling and even with a secure bridge it might seem a little too much for many. What it makes you realise is that our ancestor were much more agile and strong. While all of this is enchanting there is something else that you could do which would definitely take you to the past, Elephant rides in Sigiriya is much different from just any other ride. Traveling on top of these magnificent creatures while surveying the land below will make you feel royal for this was the primary travel means of the Kings and Queens of Sri Lanka.
