Nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring”, Kunming is a dream for flower lovers all year round. While its mild climate keeps things blooming most of the time, each season brings its own floral “stars” worth seeing. To help you get started, here’s a seasonal guide to the city’s best blooms.
Spring
From late March to early April, cherry blossoms can be seen at Dianchi Lake and the Western Hills, perfect for long strolls, picnic selfies and enjoying the many things to do in Kunming amidst nature’s beauty. In April, peonies bloom at the Kunming Botanical Garden, adding a royal touch, while pear blossoms add delicate white to areas like Wanxichong Village.

Summer
June and July bring tranquil beauty to Green Lake Park, just a short walk from Grand Park Kunming, part of Park Hotel Group. Here, you will find lotus flowers blooming in ponds, perfect for a quiet moment amidst your adventures. Don’t forget to head to Chenggong Dayu District to see fields of lavender in full bloom or experience the joy of taking in the sunflower fields in Yanglin.
Autumn
Kunming turns golden in autumn, with chrysanthemums stealing the show at the Flower Exhibition Centre from September to November, where you can expect dazzling colours. The air gets sweet too, thanks to blooming osmanthus in September and October. And don’t skip the Western Hills as they are lit up in fiery shades of orange and red maple leaves.
Winter
Even when the temperature dips, Kunming still has flowers on display. From December to February, camellias bloom quietly in parks and temples like Yuantong Temple, adding pops of red and pink. Violas and pansies also thrive, cheering up winter gardens. And here’s a surprise: cherry blossoms can be seen on Hongta West Road in winter too. Proof that in Kunming, spring never truly leaves!
