A riverside town full of old-world charm, Chiang Saen offers laidback sightseeing that provides insights into Thailand’s heritage. Here is a glimpse of what it has to offer.
Planning a Visit
Chiang Saen is in the province of Chiang Rai. Those staying at a centrally located boutique hotel in Chiang Rai including properties the likes of Hotel Sooknirund can easily plan an excursion here. It takes around 1.5 hours to get there be it by car or bus from the main bus terminal.
There are several local temples worth seeing including the impressive 14th century Wat Chedi Luang with its high brick chedi and the nearby Wat Phrathat Chom Kiti on a forested hill offering stunning summit views. Also worth a visit is the Chiang Saen National Museum where you can learn more about the town’s history.
Chiang Saen Lake
Amongst the best things to do in Chiang Saen is to visit the lake which is about 5 km from the town. It features a wetland and is an ideal place to enjoy birdwatching too; herons, ducks, kingfishers, raptors and storks can be spotted, while waders and waterfowl migrate here from November to February.
Markets & Food
Make time to explore some local markets; there is a daily market to visit, while on the weekends, a walking street market is held on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Don’t miss a chance to walk along the riverside promenade where you will find vendors offering fish dishes, BBQ chicken and pork, sticky rice and more.
