Sri Lanka’s coastlines are lined with breathtaking beaches from all corners of the island, many just minutes offering from top resort locations offering travellers the ideal merge of seaside beauty, comfort, and cultural charm.
1. Southern Coast: Calm Bays and Iconic Sunsets
Perhaps the most popular of all the beaches are those on the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka. Proximity to the capital makes them ideal short getaways and day trips. The Southern Coast also happens to have some of the most photographed beaches on the island. Unawatuna Beach is a sheltered bay with gentle waves, perfect for swimming, relaxed strolls and a lively beach centred night life. Close by is the Jungle Beach, which requires a trek through a forested trail, and surrounded by green hills. The beach is located in a bay with gentle waves, ideal for kids and beginner snorkelers. Although the beachside is without any special infrastructure it can get rather crowded, thanks to the beach being made popular by social media. Dalawella Beach, known for its shallow waters and scenic view and sightings of giant sea turtles is perfect for leisurely afternoons, while Mirissa Beach is just the place to your surf on and party the night away, you can also capture some memorable moments in picturesque locations like at coconut tree hill.
2. Tangalle and Beyond: Wild Beauty and Seclusion
When you travel further along the Southern Coast you will encounter many unspoilt beaches in the city of Tangalle. One of the most beautiful beaches in the area is Silent Beach, which lives up to its name, providing beach lovers with a long stretch of unspoilt beach giving you the seclusion you crave for. There is also Goyambokka Beach, where you will find small beach side café’s but can still offer you the beach to yourself at times. Rekawa Beach is another famous spot for turtle watching, with a famous conservation centre nearby offering visitors a rare glance of conservation in practice.
3. West Coast: Golden Sands and Cultural Landmarks
Closer to the capital and Colombo, the west coast has some amazing beaches close to resorts that offer you the some incredible beachside moments. Bentota Beach is widely popular for its water sports and jet skiing and many top resorts surrounding the beach provide all the amenities you could think of. It has a wide shoreline, which is great for children to play in. The beach can be mild to rough depending on which time you travel, river tours are also a popular option here. Nearby you can find Induruwa and Beruwala beaches providing a much quieter alternative to the fanfare usually experienced at Bentota, with many resorts such as Heritance Hotels nearby. You can spot lone fishing boats dotted along the palm fringed horizon, ideal for long swims and beachside walks. Kalutara Beach is another beautiful beach along the western coastal belt, and adds a spiritual dimension, with historic temples and a bodhi tree located close to the shore.
4. East Coast: Clear Waters and Laid-Back Vibes
The East Coast season starts from May to September and provides a noticeably different coastal experience, quieter, much clamer seas perfect for snorkelling and diving. Nilaveli Beach, in Trincomalee, has crystal-clear waters and powdery sand, perfect for snorkeling, while Uppuveli Beach is a large beach with a few beach restaurants ideal for family outings. Passekudah Beach has a shallow bay and perfectly clam waters, allowing visitors to walk far into the sea, with some of the best resorts in Sri Lanka located around the beach.
5. Southeast Coast: Surf and Solitude
For travellers and revellers drawn to dramatic scenery, Arugam Bay stands out for its global surfing reputation and expansive coastline. The town itself has become a major tourist hub with a lively expatriate community featuring many resorts, bars, cafes, yoga and lifestyle centered atmosphere. Arugam Bay has also become a surfing mecca of sorts with many international competitions and festivals held annually.
