Tangalle is a lovely, quieter spot on Sri Lanka’s south coast, perfect for enjoying the outdoors. It is less crowded than other nearby resort towns, making it ideal for travellers who would like to explore and relax at their own pace. Here are five helpful things to do while you are exploring the area.
1. Kayaking in the Tangalle Lagoon
Tangalle Lagoon is a hidden gem in the area, perfect for a peaceful kayaking trip, especially when the water is calm early in the morning. The lagoon is surrounded by mangroves, and the channels make it suitable for beginners. You can also spot water birds, monitor lizards, and maybe even some fishermen along the way.
Local kayaking operators usually rent out single and double kayaks near the lagoon entrance. Most routes last around one to two hours and stay within the sheltered waterways. For visitors staying at places in Tangalle like Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, the lagoon is easily reachable by short drive or tuk-tuk.
2. Snorkelling in Tangalle
Unlike Hikkaduwa or Pigeon Island, Tangalle is not known for being the best spot for snorkelling. But Silent Beach and Goyambokka Beach are still worth checking out.
Silent Beach is located a short distance from Tangalle town, and is one of the better spots for casual snorkelling on this stretch of coast. There are small coral patches and rock pools along the shoreline where marine life usually gathers. Late mornings often bring clearer water, especially when the monsoon season is over.
Goyambokka Beach is very close to Silent Beach and is another reliable snorkelling spot near Tangalle. The rocky areas close to the beach are a home for reef fish and coral, and you can usually see well on sunny days.
Snorkelling is one of the more accessible things to do in Tangalle if you want a low-effort water activity without travelling too far out of the town. Basic snorkelling gear is also available for rent from nearby beach cafes or local vendors.
3. Surfing at Hiriketiya or Medaketiya Beach
While Tangalle is most famous for swimming and relaxing, Hiriketiya and Medaketiya beaches nearby are perfect for catching some waves. Surfing is also a refreshing change from simply relaxing on the beach or just sightseeing. Hiriketiya, in particular, is known for its gentle waves and a beach that is easy to find for those just starting out.
Local surf schools provide quick lesson packages that come with surfboards. These sessions usually begin early in the morning when the waves are more consistent and the crowds are less.
4. Visiting Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project
Just outside Tangalle, Rekawa Beach is home to one of Sri Lanka’s most active turtle nesting grounds. The Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project operates night tours where visitors can observe turtles laying eggs.
These tours are a great way to learn about turtles and the efforts made to protect their habitats. The turtles lay eggs all year round, but they are most active from April to July. Visiting during this time is a special way to spend your time in Tangalle if you love nature and animals.

5. Exploring Mulgirigala Rock Temple
Mulgirigala Rock Temple sits around 30 minutes from Tangalle town. The site consists of a large rock outcrop with a series of cave temples built into its sides, accessed by climbing around 500 steps.
The murals and Buddha statues inside the caves date back centuries and give insight into Buddhist art and architecture of the region. From the summit, visitors get a clear view over the surrounding paddy fields, which makes for an amazing sight.
