5 Free Things to Do in Singapore – Lion City on a Budget

Southeast Asia’s glamorous city-state, Singapore, is often characterized by luxury shopping, fine dining, and a sleek skyline. However, the metropolis also offers a surprising number of free attractions and activities, allowing you to experience the Lion City without costing you a buck.
1. Wander Through the Outdoor Areas of Gardens by the Bay
Singapore’s 105-hectare urban park needs no introduction and is one of the most visited attractions in the city. While the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome require tickets, the outdoor gardens are completely free to explore, including the iconic Supertree Grove. For the most idyllic (free) Gardens by the Bay experience, visit after sunset, where the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show transforms the grove into a dazzling spectacle every night.
2. Explore the Singapore Botanic Gardens
Set in the heart of the bustling metropolis, Singapore Botanic Gardens is truly an oasis of serenity. The sprawling nature haven basks in the glory of being one of three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Swan Lake and the Rainforest Trail are two highlights that are popular as a tranquil escape away from the urban buzz. Go for a morning walk, treat yourself to a little garden picnic or simply unwind, losing yourself in the serene nature.
3. Explore Chinatown’s Heritage and Temples
For those looking for a truly authentic Singaporean experience, make your way to Singapore’s Chinatown. You are greeted by heritage shophouses, local markets and ornate temples, where entry to most of them are free, such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Pagoda Street and Sago Lane are also two highlights that are not to be missed. After a day of fascinating history, culture and heritage, call it a day, perhaps at a fine hotel in Geylang, Singapore, including the likes of Hotel 81 Premier Hollywood.
4. Catch the Light and Water Show at Marina Bay
As the sun goes down and the darkness descends, there’s no place you’d rather be than the glimmering Marina Bay, where “Spectra” steals the spotlight. It is a light and water show that takes place at the Marina Bay waterfront with stunning visual effects, dancing fountains, and orchestral music. The show is completely free and best viewed from the Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands. The daily shows are scheduled at 8 and 9 pm while there’s an additional show starting at 10 pm only on Fridays and Saturdays.
5. Visit the Merlion Park
The one attraction that makes Singapore literally the “Lion City”, your time in the city-state would certainly be incomplete without a visit to Merlion Park. The iconic half-lion, half-fish statue is one of the most-visited attractions in Singapore and has become the country’s national symbol. Visitors to the park are greeted by mind-blowing views of Marina Bay Sands and the city skyline, which is at its most breathtaking at sunrise and dusk. However, it is undoubtedly an experience to be had at any time of the day (or night).
