Negombo which is just 10 km from the main international airport lies along the west coast and has a lovely stretch of golden sand; it is an ideal spot to enjoy everything from sunbathing and swimming to kitesurfing. Come evening, the sunsets here are pretty spectacular too.
On the east coast, you will come across a more secluded shoreline home to Pasikuda Beach. Hotels and resorts can be found along the beach including properties such as The Calm Resort & Spa Pasikuda which offer water sports like snorkelling, diving and jet skiing. The waters remain calm and shallow relatively far out to sea making it an ideal family beach too.
Arugam Bay Beach
When it comes to a beach with chilled-out vibes and some of the best surfing waves in the region, Arugam Bay is the place to go to. This palm-fringed east coast beach attracts surfers from around the world looking to surf its main break known as The Point (April to October) along with other nearby surfing hotspots.
Located near the city of Galle on the south coast, Unawatuna has a picturesque stretch of shore bordered by a sheltered bay making it an ideal spot for swimming. Once the sun sets, Unawatuna has a happening nightlife scene worth experience too.
