While the town of Batticaloa in Sri Lanka is known for its cultural attractions, this fascinating destination also has other landmarks such as the Batticaloa Fort which offers an insight into the island’s colonial period. Batticaloa and its fort can be found near the island’s eastern coast and travellers in need of a well placed Sri Lanka beach hotel in the region can consider Uga Bay. Offering luxurious Pasikuda accommodation, this hotel by the beach also makes a great base from which to head to excursions to Batticaloa.
Initially constructed by the Portuguese, the Batticaloa Fort dates back to 1628 when it was used as a centre for trading and administration. Set on the small island, the fort features four bastions and is partly bordered by a lagoon and partly protected by the sea. Following the Portuguese, the Dutch subsequently took over the fort. You can explore the remains of this striking fortification when in the town and among the sites of interest are an old cannon and even an ancient Buddhist stupa.
