The Maldives is synonymous with overwater villas and brilliant turquoise lagoons, but its most appealing private island retreats offer something increasingly valuable: room to slow down. Secluded beaches, spacious villas, personalised service and uncrowded natural surroundings allow travellers to enjoy the islands on their own terms. From intimate luxury hideaways to quieter resorts far from the busiest atolls, these properties offer different ways to experience privacy without sacrificing comfort or memorable adventures.
What the Experts Have to Say
NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort
“What really makes this place special, though, is the people. Everyone is genuinely friendly.” (Maldives Magazine)

For those on the search for “What are the best secluded resorts in the Maldives for a private island escape?” the answer is closer than ever. The NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort offers a secluded island escape in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, approximately 400 kilometres south of Malé. Reached by a domestic flight followed by a speedboat transfer, the resort is well suited to travellers who want to distance themselves from busy tourist areas and settle into a slower pace of island life.
The property features 120 villas, divided between beachfront and overwater accommodation. Beach villas provide direct access to the sand, while overwater villas look out across the lagoon. Selected categories include private pools, offering an additional layer of privacy for guests who prefer swimming and sunbathing without spending the entire day around shared facilities. Spacious interiors, outdoor terraces and views of the Indian Ocean make the accommodation suitable for couples as well as families seeking room to unwind.
Seclusion does not mean a lack of activities, as the resort has a house reef and access to a dive and water sports centre, where guests can arrange snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and paddleboarding. Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll is also known for opportunities to encounter larger marine species, although sightings depend on conditions and wildlife movements.
Guests who prefer to stay on land can spend time at the spa, enjoy the outdoor swimming pool or choose from several restaurants and bars. Dining options include REEF for all-day meals and SURF for grilled dishes, while Iru Bar provides a setting for drinks overlooking the island surroundings. The resort also offers a fitness centre and a children’s club, giving families options beyond the beach.
This resort remains a practical choice for travellers who want the atmosphere of a remote private island without giving up a broad selection of facilities. Its location encourages disconnection, while its choice of villas, dining venues and water-based activities allows guests to decide how active or relaxed their stay should be.
Naladhu Private Island Maldives
“We particularly enjoyed the contemporary interior design elements, which looked refined and chic enough not to be out of place in a Manhattan loft, without being aggressively ‘designer’. The thing with a place like Naladhu Private Island is that nothing should distract from its outstanding natural beauty, something we cherished each morning the sun rose on our faces (the benefit of a bed facing east!), and when we sat on our terrace at night, watching crabs and, on occasion, small sharks in the shallow waters below.” (OutThere)

As a private island retreat in South Malé Atoll, Naladhu Private Island Maldives is particularly appealing to travellers who want a quiet, intimate setting rather than the atmosphere of a larger resort. The property has 20 private houses, each designed to provide generous living space, a private infinity pool and a sheltered outdoor area. Personal hosts, known as Kuwaanu, help arrange individual requests, making it easier for guests to enjoy their stay without having to organise every detail themselves.
Privacy here is not limited to the accommodation, as guests can opt for meals in their residence, enjoy cosy beachfront dining or choose experiences that fit around their preferred pace. The flexibility is particularly attractive to couples celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, who may prefer a leisurely breakfast and an unhurried afternoon rather than a packed schedule of activities.
Although the island encourages relaxation, there is plenty to explore for those who want a change of scenery. Guests can engage in snorkelling, water sports, spa treatments and culinary experiences, while access to dining venues at neighbouring Anantara resorts adds variety without requiring a move to a busier property.
Naladhu’s appeal lies in the balance between attentive service and personal freedom. Guests have support when they need it, but the atmosphere remains intimate and relaxed. For travellers who define luxury as having space, discretion and control over their time, it is an appealing choice.
COMO Cocoa Island

Featured in Condé Nast Traveler, COMO Cocoa Island offers a more intimate interpretation of Maldivian luxury, combining minimalist design, overwater accommodation and a strong focus on wellbeing. Located on Makunufushi in South Malé Atoll, the resort is known for its distinctive villas inspired by traditional dhonis. The relatively small collection of accommodation creates a quieter atmosphere for guests seeking a peaceful island escape.
The villas are thoughtfully designed to make the surrounding ocean a central part of the experience. Guests can wake to lagoon views, step onto their private decks and enjoy the changing colours of the water throughout the day. The setting encourages a slower pace, whether that means spending an afternoon reading beside the sea or heading out for a swim before breakfast.
Wellness is another defining feature, as the resort’s COMO Shambhala Retreat offers spa treatments, yoga and meditation, making it particularly attractive to travellers who want their time away to feel restorative. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional luxury amenities, the property encourages guests to focus on relaxation and personal wellbeing.
For those who enjoy exploring, the surrounding waters offer opportunities for snorkelling and diving, with coral reefs and marine life providing a natural attraction. Guided activities can help visitors discover the underwater environment while learning about the importance of protecting fragile reef ecosystems.
Dining complements the resort’s wellness-oriented atmosphere. The cuisine draws on Indian and Pacific Rim influences, balancing fresh flavours with a range of indulgent options. Guests can enjoy meals in a relaxed setting after a day spent swimming, exploring or unwinding at the spa.
COMO Cocoa Island is particularly suited towards couples and solo travellers who value understated luxury over elaborate entertainment. Its intimate scale, ocean-facing villas and emphasis on wellbeing make it an appealing retreat for anyone seeking a quieter alternative to larger island resorts.
Conclusion
These three resorts offer different interpretations of privacy in the Maldives. Naladhu Private Island Maldives is well suited to travellers seeking intimate accommodation and highly personalised service, while NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort appeals to those who want a remote island setting with a broad choice of facilities and activities. COMO Cocoa Island, meanwhile, offers a quieter, wellness-focused escape with distinctive overwater villas. Each demonstrates that a private island retreat is not simply about being surrounded by water, but about having the space to relax, enjoy nature and experience the Maldives at a pace that feels entirely your own.
