The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds great significance, as it houses one of Lord Buddha’s left canine teeth. Located in the Royal Palace Complex in Kandy, here is what you need to know before you visit the temple.
Getting there
The Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the centre of Kandy, overlooking the serene Kandy Lake. Most guests hop on a tuk-tuk or a rented car to get dropped off at the temple. Staff at hotels such as Amaya Hills Kandy can provide more information on the best way to get to the temple.
Attire
Like most religious sites, modest attire is required when entering the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. If you happen to be in clothes that reveal your shoulders and knees, there are booths at the entrance where you can rent appropriate garments to cover yourself before entering the temple. You will also need to store large bags at the entrance; therefore, it is recommended to leave your luggage at your Kandy resort.
Tickets
Visitors are required to purchase an entrance ticket upon arrival. The ticket also allows access to many areas within the complex, such as the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Dalada Museum, Royal Palace and Tusker Museum.
Daily Service
A daily service takes place at the temple every day in three parts: morning, midday and evening. Partaking in these ceremonies will give you a glimpse of the traditions and culture of Sri Lanka, although the temple gets very crowded during this time.
