Colombo, in Sri Lanka, has a habit of surprising visitors (in a good way!) who look beyond the usual checklist. If you are keen to experience the city the way locals do, these are the experiences definitely worth making time for.
01. After Seeing the Seema Malaka, Visit Gangaramaya Temple
Most visitors stop at the Seema Malaka Temple, and honestly, who can blame them? Floating gently on Beira Lake, with bronze Buddha statues gazing over calm waters, it’s one of Colombo’s most peaceful spots, especially at sunrise or sunset. But here’s the part many miss: just a short walk away is Gangaramaya Temple, and it’s a whole different vibe! Part temple, part museum, it also showcases distinctive architecture with influences from Sri Lanka, China, India, and Thailand. You will find everything from sacred relics to antique cars here, making it a fascinating place to visit.

02. Enjoy Recreation and Relaxation at Independence Square
If you want to get active or just unwind with family, friends, your partner or even by yourself, head to Independence Square early in the morning or in the evening. This is where joggers, cyclists, families and skateboarders all share the same space. The grand Independence Memorial Hall sits proudly at the centre, inspired by Kandyan architecture, and beneath it lies a small museum highlighting Sri Lanka’s journey to independence. Once you have explored, wander over to the nearby Arcade Independence Square for dining, shopping and a well-earned drink!
03. Gain an Appreciation for Nature and Wildlife
This may be a busy city, but there are spaces where you can enjoy nature and wildlife too. That’s why, for visitors staying in Colombo, hotels also offer curated experiences with a local guide or specialist who will help you see a whole new side to this dynamic metropolis. This can include getting to explore marshlands that are home to otters, water monitors, rare birds and even sea eagles or going on walks amidst flora ranging from medicinal herbs to towering trees. Some properties like Cinnamon Grand Colombo even help organise hands-on experiences like becoming a zookeeper’s assistant for the day, which means you can actually feed and interact with animals!
04. Experience the City’s Colonial Past
Colombo’s Fort area is like an open-air history book, best explored on foot when the heat eases (sunscreen, sunnies and a cap or sunhat will be handy!). Wander past grand colonial-era buildings once used by British administrators and traders. The iconic red-brick Cargills Building still dominates the cityscape, while the old lighthouse-turned-clock-tower on Chatham Street is a charming reminder of the past. Finish at the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, a beautifully restored colonial complex now home to cafés, restaurants and boutiques. It’s the perfect spot to sit down, cool off and soak in the contrast between old Colombo and new.
05. Savour Street Food at Galle Face Green
As evening falls, Galle Face Green transforms into Colombo’s favourite open-air space beside the Indian Ocean. It’s a place where you can see friends and families enjoying picnics, kids playing games or flying kites and eager Instagrammers looking to capture magical sunsets. Of course, what tourists may not know is that it’s also one of the best spots to savour authentic and reasonably priced street food. Try isso wade, which are crispy shrimp fritters with a spicy kick or watch the hypnotic chopping of kottu roti, made by stir-frying shredded godamba roti (a kind of flatbread) with eggs, veggies and meat on a hot griddle. Yes, it’s as yummy as it sounds!
