Surrounded by misty hills, tea plantations, and sacred forests, the ancient Kingdom of Kandy is the place to be for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. The region offers trails ranging from gentle forest walks to challenging climbs, each rewarding walkers with scenic views, rich biodiversity, and a peaceful escape. Here are seven of the best nature walks and hiking trails to explore around Kandy.
1. Kandy’s Pekoe Trail
Stretching across 300 km with curated trails across tea estates and cloud forests, the Pekoe Trail celebrates Sri Lanka with its first long-distance hiking route. A significant portion of the trail winds through Kandy’s gorgeous landscapes, snaking past colonial-era bungalows, plantations, and village paths. While the entire stage through Kandy would take several days to complete, the trail can be conquered through shorter segments, whether it’s from Galaha to Loolkandura or Pundaluoya to Watagoda.
Each portion varies in difficulty and distance, making it suitable for leisurely hikes across different difficulties. Beyond the natural landscapes, the Pekoe Trail additionally connects travellers to the communities it passes through, enriching local life alongside the hiking experience.
2. Hanthana Mountain
The Hanthana Mountain range is one of Kandy’s most popular hiking destinations, and its viewpoint at the peak is unmatched. With two trail options, hikers can choose anything from short climbs to longer ridge walks. The shorter, 2-hour climb stretches across 4 km and leads hikers directly to the peak and back. Meanwhile, the longer, 4-hour route takes you through a more adventurous trail beyond the peak. The summit itself rewards with sweeping views over Kandy city, surrounding valleys, and distant mountains, making it ideal for sunrise or sunset hikes.
3. Udawatta Kele Forest
If you’re in town and are looking for things to do in Kandy that aren’t far from hotels like Earls Regency, head to the Udawatta Kele nature reserve. Located surprisingly close to the city centre, Udawatta Kele Sanctuary is a tranquil forest reserve rich in birdlife, butterflies, and endemic flora. Shaded walking paths wind past ponds and ancient ruins, offering an easy nature walk suitable for families and casual explorers seeking calm amid the city.
4. Deanston Mini World’s End
A lesser-known gem near Kandy, Deanston Mini World’s End offers a dramatic viewpoint overlooking deep valleys, tea-covered slopes, and gorgeous pine forests. Located in Meemure along the Knuckles Mountain Range, the trail begins at an idyllic forest stream and passes through a wooded area before reaching the cliff edge. Much shorter than most hikes at just 1.2km, the route is moderately easy to navigate with a striking payoff for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Do keep in mind that there is a small entry fee at the start of the trail.
5. Yahangala
Yahangala is a sacred rock mountain associated with Sri Lankan folklore and history. Standing at a height of 1200 metres above sea level, the hike is steep in sections and requires some stamina, but it rewards trekkers with panoramic views of the Knuckles range and the surrounding countryside. Its spiritual significance and untouched environment add depth to the experience.
6. Kondagala
Located within the Loolkondera Tea Estate, Kondagala is a quieter hiking destination ideal for those seeking solitude. The trail winds through forests and rocky terrain before opening up to expansive hill-country views. With fewer visitors, it’s perfect for mindful walking and immersive nature experiences away from busy paths.

7. Monara Gala (Peacock Mountain)
Monara Gala, or Peacock Mountain, is a rewarding hike known for its distinctive rock formations and sweeping landscapes. Early morning hikes offer cool temperatures and a chance to spot birds and wildlife, while the summit provides a serene viewpoint over lush valleys.
