If you’ve got just two days in Colombo, get ready to dive into a mix of bustling city streets, colourful markets, and hidden gems. From sampling street food and exploring vibrant neighbourhoods to checking out colonial-era landmarks and catching sunset views by the ocean, there’s plenty to see and do.
Day 1 – Pettah and the Red Mosque
Pettah is where Colombo’s energy hits its peak, with narrow streets buzzing with tuk-tuks, shouting vendors, and market stalls selling everything from tech to exotic fruit. A must-see here is the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, or Red Mosque, right in the middle of the area. Built in 1909, its striking white-and-red striped façade makes it instantly recognisable. It can get quite busy, so plan ahead while you stay at luxurious hotels such as the NH Collection Colombo.
Day 1 – Explore Gangaramaya Temple
The temple isn’t just a place of worship—it’s also an important museum and cultural hub, showcasing a mix of statues, artefacts, and shrines with Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai and Indian influences. The main shrine room is elegantly adorned, and there’s a small Buddhist library on the premises. Outside, Buddha statues line up in rows in the courtyard, creating a serene spot that’s perfect for capturing stunning photos.
Day 2 – Dutch Fort Area
Head westward to Colombo Fort, the city’s historic core. Once a fortified area under Dutch and British rule, it now blends colonial-era buildings with modern offices. Don’t miss the Dutch Hospital Precinct, one of the oldest structures in the city. Built in the 1600s as a hospital for Dutch settlers, it’s now a lively spot full of shops, cafés, and restaurants.
Day 2 – Galle Face Green

As the sun sets, head to Galle Face Green, a scenic seaside promenade along the Indian Ocean. Evenings are especially lively, with families flying kites, playing cricket, and enjoying snacks from the row of food stalls. It’s also one of the best spots in Colombo to try local street food before you head back to your hotel in Colombo.
