Offering more than just fun in the sun, sand and surf, Kalutara is the perfect place for that quintessential coastal escape in Sri Lanka. If it’s going to be your first time here (and surely not your last!), these are key places to spend time at.
Kalutara Beach
With palm-fringed sands perfect for sunbathing, family games, or hand-in-hand evening strolls, the beach is a key draw. Maximise coastal bliss by staying at a property here like Avani Kalutara Resort; unwind in an ocean view pool suite, laze on the warm sand, try water sports at the nearby lagoon, and enjoy romantic dining right on the shore. It’s even a dreamy spot for a magical beach wedding!
Thudugala Ella (Waterfall)
Head off the tourist trail to Thudugala Ella, a charming waterfall with a natural pool area set amidst a forest. Some hotels in Kalutara even offer guided cycling tours, adding a bit of adventure before you arrive. The waterfall sits on a former colonial plantation, and while it’s not the tallest, it’s incredibly peaceful. Of course, it’s also a great place to have a refreshing dip, the ideal reward after cycling to this site!
Kalutara Temple
One of the most iconic sights in Kalutara, this temple features a striking all-white stupa. It’s also one of the few hollow stupas in the world, meaning you can actually go inside, though remember to dress modestly. Admire murals depicting key moments from Lord Buddha’s life before visiting the sacred Bodhi tree nearby, which has a rich history and is rooted (pardon the pun!) in spiritual devotion.

Richmond Castle
While this isn’t a classic English castle, this Edwardian mansion has its own charm. Built during the British colonial era by a wealthy landowner for his wife, it blends architectural styles and features a beautiful garden, too. Today, it serves as an educational centre for underprivileged children, though you can tour the inside. Fun fact: Movie fans may recognise it from the film “Funny Boy” (it was the old mansion where Shehan stayed), adding to its star appeal!
