While Abu Dhabi is certainly a destination which has rapidly progressed over the years, behind this development is a forward-thinking city which is quietly leading a green revolution in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is definitely proving that sustainability and modern living can, in fact, go hand in hand.
Environment Vision 2030 in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s Environment Vision 2030 is its roadmap to a greener future; it’s one that balances progress with preservation. Its focus is centred on five main areas, namely, water resources, climate change, biodiversity, habitats and cultural heritage, waste management and clean air and noise pollution. Think of it as the city’s promise to future generations, to grow smarter, not just faster.
Renewable Energy Use in Action
On Sir Bani Yas Island, wind turbines provide electricity to resorts here as well as some amount of energy to Al Dahnna on the mainland. Interestingly, properties on the island like Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort are also Green Growth 2050 certified, with sustainable measures being put into practice. Of course, then, there is also the Al Dhafra Solar PV project, the largest single-site solar photovoltaic plant in the world, powering more than 160,000 homes in the UAE.
Wildlife Conservation to the Fore
For this example, Sir Bani Yas Island is yet again in the spotlight. Named as a Royal Nature Reserve in 1971 by His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE, it focused on the conservation of various endangered species.
A key success story here is the Arabian oryx, which, in the 1960s, was classified as extinct in the wild. However, thanks to the breeding programme here, the park is now home to one of the world’s largest Arabian oryx herds. Promoting Eco-friendly Living
The emirate is also ensuring that greener living is part of everyday life. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has banned single-use plastic bags, and on 1st June 2024, enforced a ban on certain Styrofoam products. Meanwhile, Masdar City stands as a living, “breathing” model of sustainability, featuring eco-friendly buildings as well as the efficient use of energy and water.
