With gorgeous golden beaches, misty tea plantations, and an incredibly colourful culture, Sri Lanka is a must-visit for anyone itching for a tropical holiday. To get the most out of your visit, here are a few insider tips for a smoother island getaway.
Explore Beyond the Peak Season
Although December through April offers some of the best weather, there’s more to the island beyond the peak season. Off-seasons and shoulder seasons often mean fewer crowds, great surfing conditions, and deals you can’t miss at luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. Plus, the eastern coast is nice and dry during these months.
Don’t Underestimate the Heat (and Humidity)
With temperatures hitting 37°C along the southern coast, the heat and humidity can get brutal if you’re not prepared. Natural fabrics like linen and cotton are perfect, while lighter-coloured clothing absorbs less heat than darker items. Hydration is also key; don’t forget to take plenty of electrolytes, or sip on a fresh king coconut for a pick-me-up.
Download a Ride-Hailing App
The best way to avoid tuk-tuk scams is to download a ride-hailing app. With fixed prices and helpful maps, apps like Pick Me or Uber are available in most major cities, although they might not be in more remote areas.
Hotels vs. ‘Hotels’
In Sri Lanka, not every ‘hotel’ is a hotel in a traditional sense. While Araliya Hotels & Resorts might offer the luxury accommodation you expect, joints like Hotel De Plaza or Hotel Pilawoos are a little bit different. These ‘hotels’ are actually hole-in-the-wall restaurants, serving up affordable local meals late into the night. You won’t be able to book a room here, but you will be able to share a hearty kottu with neighbourhood regulars.
Avoid Going Out For Drinks on Poya Days

Full moons are auspicious to Sri Lankan Buddhists, who spend these nights visiting temples. Known locally as “Poya”, these holy days are also alcohol-free, and drinks are not sold at restaurants or supermarkets.
